Alienware M17x vs MacBook Pro 17"?
Hey guys, I’m really conflicted here..
I want to get an Alienware M17x laptop because of its performance and price (compared to the MacBook Pro) but am caught on it’s battery life. (I heard even with the additional battery pack it’s like around 2 hours of solid gaming) And am also caught on that fact that apart from running a Hackint0sh project (which, as far as I can find, for Alienware laptops, are extremely buggy) I wouldn’t be able to run program like Final Cut Pro and GarageBand (although I don’t actually own these programs yet, I’m considering going into design in University in two years)
The Specifications are as follow:
Alienware M17x Specs:
17" LCD Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard
Intel Core i7-820QM Processor 1.73GHz – 4 Cores/8 Threads – 8MB Cache
8GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM

Belkin 17" Messenger Bag
Logitech M905 Anywhere Mouse

Aprox. Gaming battery life, 2-3 hours max.
Total Price: AUD,367.57
MacBook Pro Specs:

8GB Dual-channel 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM

Basically, I am currently a year 10 student, who doesn’t require any Mac exclusive programs (yet) but am looking into design possibly, for University. (still a big maybe)
I don’t do any computer gaming as of current (due to my crappy PC) but would like to look into it.
With the Alienware, I can do some serious gaming, and decent media editing, while on the MacBook Pro, I can do some serious media editing, and some decent gaming. (by using Boot Camp to boot into Windows 7)
Based on the specs, price, value, and quite importantly, the battery life, what would you guys recommend?
(I feel it’s important to point out that the MacBook Pro is considerably lighter than the Alienware M17x, and it looks a lot nicer than the M17x too.)
As always, thank you so much guys,
Liam.

Even the most powerful Windows PCs bog down over time from all the malware and viruses their antivirus doesn’t catch and all the junk files left over from uninstalled software and everything cleaners skip over. That doesn’t happen with a Mac.
The reason it’s battery life is so low is because of its sheer performance power, something a MacBook Pro is simply lacking. If you want to do some serious gaming on the go then the m17x is the way to go. "Decent gaming" is also unlikely(Mac suck at this something fierce). But if you dont plan on doing that, and prefer battery life and weight than get the MacBook Pro.
I will naturally choose alienware over mac but thats mostly personal preference but actually alienware would be the better choice in my opinion as I have always felt that macs were designed to be visually appealing and more about aesthetics than performance where as alienwares are designed for power and speed. Also with alienware you’re getting what you pay for but with macs you’re paying for "prettiness", so I would go with the alienware.
If you are not that serious into gaming then I would get the Macbook. Its graphics card is decent enough to play most games on good settings and its much more portable (and much more efficient with its switchable graphics and processor using a 32nm manufacturing process). Just to let you know that you have the i7 processor in the MacBook as quad core, but its not, its dual core.
(graphics information with some gaming benchmarks below) – the GT 330M in the Macbook has GDDR3 memory.
If you are near an outlet a lot then you might consider the Alienware for its powerful specs.
